Good Classic Story
I never read the Cricket in Times Square when I was a kid, but I have heard of it. My children and I had to read this book for our book club. I was really glad we needed to read it since it was a classic story that I hadn't read. We first listened to the audiobook then we read the book. My children really enjoyed the story about 3 unlikely friends (a cricket, a rat, and a cat), and it was a very quick read. My children even created a cardboard pagoda with a bell and we made a solar cricket after we read the book.

Beautiful story of friendship and loyalty
I loved this book! I read it with my 10 year who usually hates reading. She didn't want to put it down. We loved the two dynamics, the human world and the friendship between the boy and the cricket, and the behind the scenes animal world with the unlikely friendship that formed between the cricket, mouse and cat. The love and self sacrifice that all the characters had toward one another was just beautiful!

Cute book
I bought this for my niece after reading it myself--SUCH a sweet book! This book is obviously written for kids, but it has something for everyone in here...it's filled with art, music, love. It's just really cute for a child or for yourself if you want to revisit your innocence for an afternoon

happy, heartwarming, full of liveliness
When i first picked up this book, I couldn't put it down anymore. It brings you on this joyful adventure, set beneath the streets of the well known Times square. There, in an old drainage pipe, lives Tucker mouse, with his best friend Harry cat in a wonderful companionship. When the two friends meet a dirty cricket, that came all the way from Connecticut, and loves chirping little compositions, they need to help the confused cricket get used to the big City's lifestyle. Also trying to save the decreasing buisness of a poor family's newsstand, the animals stay together, even when it seems hopeless. A story of true Friendship, Happiness and the relationship between a boy and a cricket.

A Childhood Favorite
I first read this book back in elementary school in the late 1960's. It wasn't a required book to read, I just chose it because I guess at that age I was intrigued.Because this was during the day and age pre-video games, a great book was an important find during that time. The Cricket in Times Square was one of those books.I disappeared into it and loved being in the subway, visiting the newsstand and almost smelling the newspapers, and taking a trip to mysterious Chinatown. Even after allthese years I remember this book fondly and I was actually looking to see if it was in EBook form because I thought it would be great to read again. Unfortunately it isn't yet. This book is a great book for boy or girl to read and I hope they enjoy it today as I did back when I was a kid. This book and the Men of Iron by Howard Pyle were my two elementary school favorites.

and he liked it enough we got Tucker's Countryside from the library
I read this to my 7 year old, and he liked it enough we got Tucker's Countryside from the library. I am now in the middle of reading this to his class and another 2nd grade class, and the interest level has been quite good (once I got a couple chapters in, but it's like that with every book at that age).

enchanting
I liked it because it was funny, sad and engrossing. I think it is a great book for many ages. Third and fourth graders can read it alone, but would recommend it read out loud by any adult. It will keep your attention. I like that there were only a few characters because I could keep everyone straight. I gave it five stars because it was well written and the development of the characters and story line was well paced and had good highs and lows.

nostalgic reading
I borrowed this from the library when I was about 10 and remembered it suddenly the other day, 25 years later and I was chuffed to find it on Amazon. I remember when I read it back then, I was really unfamiliar with all the Americanisms, it was unlike any other book i'd read at the time. I don't remember the entire story (I haven't yet re-read it) but the scenes in the newspaper stand come back to me, and something about liverwurst! I'm going to search for all the other memorable books I read but didn't own/keep so I can build a collection for my son.

Such a brilliant book!
Just as good as I remember it from a kid although a few un PC bits in that would definitely be edited out today -- still the themes of friendship, loyalty and caring about others rings true

the cricket in times square
