Deadly Class Volume 8: Never Go Back

Marcus and Maria return to Kings
3.5 starsThe title is not a spoiler. It happens at the end of the first issue of this trade. The first issue is a bit of a slog - it's a peyote dream of Marcus's. I like much of Rick Remender's work (his X-Men assassin book, Tokyo Ghost, and this series the most), but occasionally he lapses into depressing thought-rants (Low was packed with them, and Black Science devolved into them). He is guilty of that here in the peyote sequence. The rest of the story is entertaining and has the murderous high school intrigue that we've come to expect and love out of this series. Marcus and Maria are front and center here - no time for side characters (that's fine...Remender spent a lot of time on side characters the last few trades). There is even a throwback issue at the end, where we get to revisit time with characters since killed.Keep em coming.

A near perfect book
Probably my favorite comic series ever. Top 10 FOR SURE. The entire series is epic and emotional. Highly recommended. This book sees them back at the school and ready to deal with some serious issues. Catharsis tbd.

A solid entry.
Just when I think the writing is a little over-wrought, I remind myself the narrator is a teenager. Remender nails that voice consistently. I found this volume to be a little more uneven than previous installments, particularly in the initial dream sequence which was a little too disjointed and rambling (in the way that dreams can be I guess) for my taste. If this were a stand-alone piece I'd give it 3 stars but it earns 4 because it moves the narrative forward and like every volume, it's not perfect but has a lot of heart with ideas worth reminding yourself of -- amidst plenty of the action and tension you expect from the alumni of King's Dominion.
