Such a cute story and I got this gently used book for a great price. It was exactly as the seller described. Super happy with my purchase.

Author/Illustrator Peggy Rathman is Wonderful
It's an adorable book about a sweet, if clueless, safety officer, and the dog he acquires who becomes the star of the show. I'm a fan of Ms. Rathman, as are the children to whom I read her books. Other beloveds are Ten Minutes Until Bed Time -- with unwritten stories of little hamsters in her illustrations -- and Good Night, a board book that's a stunner, also with untexted stories within her marvelous, very funny, illustrations. Your little ones will love them.

Safety Tip #101: Always work with a buddy!
You probably know someone like Officer Buckle. He knows more about safety than anyone else in Napville, and he's more than willing to share his expertise. If only someone would listen. Instead, when Officer Buckle delivers his litany of safety tips at Napville schools, some of the kids fly paper airplanes in the auditorium. Some of the kids fall asleep. Nobody pays attention. Worst of all, they do the exact things he warned them against. That all changes when Gloria, the new police dog, joins Officer Buckle for one of his safety lectures. As far as Officer Buckle knows, Gloria just sits next to him on stage and smiles. But the moment his back is turned, she's acting out each of his safety tips -- such as "NEVER leave a THUMBTACK where you might SIT on it!" Not only are the kids paying attention, they're laughing, cheering, and -- best of all -- putting into practice what they learn in the lecture! Suddenly every school in town wants a safety lecture.Everything goes well until Officer Buckle catches a story about their lectures on the 10 o'clock news. There he is on TV, pronouncing safety tip ninety nine ("Don't go swimming during an electrical storm") with as much emphasis as he can muster, and there's Gloria, stealing the show. Not only does that incident lead to safety tip one hundred ("Never turn your back on a strange dog"), but it signals the end of Officer Buckle's association with Gloria.Gloria does the next safety lecture on her own, and it's so boring even she falls asleep. Afterwards, the school has it's worst accident ever. Officer Buckle and Gloria realize they need each other to get their safety message across. As Officer Buckle says in safety tip one hundred and one, "Always work with a buddy."The sight gags in Peggy Rathmann's illustrations helped earn this book a Caldecott Medal. They also contain a lot of practical safety information, which makes this book a great place to start for a discussion on safety, as well as for a discussion on teamwork and partnership

You will finish this book even after the kids fall asleep.
I have been enjoying this modern classic for almost 30 years. The best children's offerings, books, videos, TV, take the adult in the room into account. They should be enjoyable for both and not drive an adult from the room, or be a trial to read. I love this book.

A must for your bookshelf
I love this book. The illustrations are wonderfully kid-friendly - and by that I mean kids of all ages. There is so much detail, so much thoughtfulness in every section of each page. There is plenty of humor, yet also depth of character development. The variety can often be hard to come by in a short, illustrated children's book. Yet, somehow the author magically accomplishes the complete depiction of Officer Buckle's world within the page and word limitations of the genre of young children's literature. Peggy Rathmann creates wonderful stories that both entertain and impress, and this has got to be the best of the best. The dog-police officer relationship can serve as a metaphor for many kinds of relationships in a person's life. A very poignant, touching story, without bashing the reader over the head with the concluding message. The point comes across subtly yet seamlessly. It's one of the few stories I want to read over and over again.

Two Are Better Than One
This wonderful picture book, which won the Caldecott Medal, is written and illustrated by Peggy Rathmann. Police Officer Buckle goes to elementary schools and makes speeches on safety: "Never Stand on a Swivel Chair." Buckle is sedate and unimaginative and the children pay no attention to what he is saying. Then one day a police dog, Gloria, is assigned to assist Officer Buckle. Unbeknownst to him (he thinks Gloria is simply sitting behind him on the stage), Gloria mimics what happens if, for example, you stand on a swivel chair. The children sit up and pay attention. They clap! They shout! They love these safety speeches! But when Officer Buckle learns that the reason for all the enthusiasm appears to be Gloria's antics, he won't go into the schools anymore. He thought HE was the star. The police send Gloria by herself. But without Officer Buckle, Gloria is boring: she has nobody to interact with. The children fall asleep. And then one of the children, who has written to Officer Buckle before, reminds him that he and Gloria are a T.E.A.M. So the two friends, Buckle and Gloria, make up and continue to work as a team. A great book on teamwork.

Please list the saftey rules or sell a flashcard set.
Great story about teamwork. The dog acts out all the safety rules showing the dangers = ) My only issue is this - where is a list of all the safety rules? It is a nice story, but it should leap into teaching safety rules. After reading this book, kids are going to want to know all of them and see the dog's actions for each. PLEASE make another book or a set of flashcards with ALL the safety rules. Seriously, I would buy like 10 sets and mail them to everyone I know. This book could have lead into teaching students so much!

Terrific story and Award winner
This is a wonderful picture book with great illustrations which match the humour and lessons to be learned. Every child I have read this book to--from three to eight years of age have enjoyed it (and one asked, "Where do you get these terrific stories?") so I highly recommend it. It's a great book for discussion.
