National Hardware N115-451 V129 Screen/Storm Door Hinges in Black, 3" x 2-1/2", 2 piece

Be sure that you actually received N115 "Screen/Storm Door" hinges. Some of the reviews here are for different hinges — whether because the customer received the wrong product, or because they ordered something similar, but not actually this product. These hinges are subtly different from anything else out there, so they allow you to do things that you can’t do with other hinges. Like flip one side of the hinge so that the leaves are offset to accommodate the fact that most door trim is 3/4” thick, while most screen doors are 1” thick. Since the screw holes are subtly countersunk from both sides, flat-head screws will sit flush from either direction. There are other creative things you can do with this geometry once you wrap your head around it. These hinges are for surface-mounting — not for mortising into the edge of the door ( you can edge-mount or mortise one leg of the hinge if needed for a specific installation, but these do not have the bend at the knuckle that brings the plates closer together when folded shut the way that mortise hinges do). If you need a full-mortise hinge, this is probably the wrong hardware for your project. Yes the hinge pins are removable. But they’re tight, because of the paint on the pins. Drive the pin out before you install the hinges, scrape the paint off the hidden part of the pin, and they’ll be a lot easier to remove in the future. If you’re planning on removing these seasonally, don’t drive the pin all the way down when you install the door. They’ll work just fine that way. If you don’t like the bit of exposed silver pin, grab a marker and color it. The only down side is that these aren’t large, strong hinges. They’re just right for a screen door, but I’m not sure I’d use them on a full-glass storm door — or I’d use 3-4 instead of just 2. Also, the included screws are just 3/4". Because these are surface-mount hinges I was able to paint 1" oval-head SMS to match and they're much stronger without coming through the back of the 1" thick door.

Ordered these to match other hinges on a door to a screen porch on our lake house. They work just fine and look good.

Hinges cam very quick. Just what I wanted. Hung 2 wooden screen doors that I made look great.

These hinges were just the right size to mount a reproduction wooden colonial storm door I made. I used three to be safe as the door weighs about 50 lbs. Surface mounting instead of mortising the hinges makes installation very easy. My only problem is the length of the screws that are supplied. I replaced them with a slightly larger diameter and longer length.
