Screen legends Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire reunite in the musical spectacular Blue Skies. Dancing star Jed Potter (Astaire) and singer/nightclub owner Johnny Adams (Crosby) are both in love with songstress Mary O'Hara (Joan Caulfield). She marries Johnny but his passion for buying and selling nightclubs drives them apart. So Jed steps in, hoping to win Mary's heart - until fate steps in and changes the lives of all three. Featuring 47 sets, elaborate costumes and 30 songs by Irving Berlin including the showstopper "Puttin' on the Ritz", Blue Skies remains one of the all-time great musicals!

Fred is Puttin' on the Ritz!!! plus Bing, if you like that sort of thing....
Did you love the bit in Young Frankenstein when Gene Wilder and Peter Boyle performed "Puttin' on the Ritz" to an unappreciative audience? Fred Astaire performed it with multiple iterations of himself before the era of digital compositing. Amazing work with his bouncing cane. Also, Bing Crosby and a Starlet in a romantic triangle in some loosely connected opportunity to showcase some slightly less cringe ethnic themed nightclub vignettes for Bing, which I skipped just for the Fred Astaire vignettes.

The Saddest Musical I've Ever Seen
Unlike other upbeat musicals BLUE SKIES has a melancholy atmosphere. But so does the title song. I love to hear Bing sing and watch Astaire dance, but the character motivation and forced resolution of the thin plot made me wince. That said, I will watch it again for a couple of finer moments. Astaire's "Puttin' on the Ritz" is enjoyable and the comedic routines of Billy de Wolfe are notable. Joan Caulfield, who fell in love with Crosby during this movie, seems forlorn, like a woman who will be left behind....and she is in real life. I will watch BLUE SKIES again. But it is the saddest musical I've ever seen.

OK
Nice songs but not too much of a story. Still a great print on blue ray and it is entertaining.

Irving Berlin's songs, served up deliciously
Take Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire at their glorious best. Add a touch of the beautiful Joan Caulfield and the rhythmic dancing and singing of Olga San Juan, and you will savor the wide range of Irving Berlin's music. The quality of the DVD is surprisingly high -- brilliant color and sharp images -- for a film from 1946. Not an MGM production, but in my opinion this is entertainment of the highest value. Highly recommended.
