Sunco Ultra Thin Recessed Ceiling Lights
These lights are the easiest, new install recessed lights I have ever installed and I have installed several different types, from the full can, mounted to the joist type, to the electric box mounted to the light type, to these, with a free floating electric box. What I love about these is you do not have to worry about the location of the ceiling joist because the insert is only 1/2” deep, meaning that if you cut your hole and hit a joist the light will still go into the cut out, unbothered by the joist. You can pull the wire out of the ceiling and splice your wires inside the box and push the box into the ceiling and then connect your light to the pigtail from the box, then rotate the light insert around the hole until the two light clips clear the joist and presto, the spring tension on the light will pull the light up flush to the ceiling. I put 6 of these in the recessed opening, in my kitchen, that previously held 4 duel 4’ tube fluorescent lights. I ran into a joist on all 6 of the lights, but no problem, the job came out perfect, with many compliments from neighbors and family. I used a 6” hole saw, purchased here on Amazon. On some of the lights I had to rotate the light fixture around until I located the position where the light would pull up snug to the ceiling. The beauty of these lights is that you can locate exactly where you want each light, then mark the location and drill the hole, without worrying where the ceiling joists are located, which allows you to perfectly center your light, or light cluster. I used these 6 lights to replace eight 40Watt fluorescent tubes and the light was actually brighter from these lights than the tubes were putting out. One last comment, the electric box is pretty small, suitable for two 14 gauge wires, usually one in and one out to the next light, but some situations will dictate more wires, which can be challenging. In one box I needed to splice four 14 gauge wires, which would normally not be doable, but I managed to do it and still put the lid on the box tightly, here’s how, I took the four wires and cut them to exactly the same length, stripped off the jacket, just enough to keep the jacket inside the box, stripped off about 1/2” of the insulation on the eight individual wires, tried them tight together with a zip-tie to keep the ends flush, inserted them inside the box and wire nutted the eight white wires together and then did the same to the black wires. All the wire and wire nuts should fit flush inside the electric box opening. Good luck on your lighting project.

Stunning new lights
These are perfect and just what I wanted. FYI, if you're replacing old CFM lights, save yourself some time and look up a how to video on YouTube. Otherwise, these were super simple to install. See the before and after pics.

Not happy with longevity.
Several lights have stopped working after just 6 months. At least they are inexpensive and easy to replace.

Easy to install and great upgrade
Easy to install - it took my husband under two hours to install. He has no prior knowledge of electricity or wiring. The instructions are very simple and easy.Very bright - this transformed our hallway and entrance into a beautiful bright space. It looks like a new place.Good quality - these are great quality, the wires are strong and are great to work with. The box is also nice and safe for the wires. In conclusion, installing these Sunco spotlights is the most affordable way to transform the lighting of your home.

Not worth the risk
Like many homeowners, I’m always on the hunt for a good deal or a way to save money with projects around the home. These lights seemed like a great way to do so—after all, who can go wrong with a product that has thousands of good reviews? So, I picked these up to have an electrician install in our house. When they came in, I noticed it was a plastic box. It threw me off at first, but I remembered that most receptacle boxes are plastic, and I didn’t think anything of it.When our electrician came to install the lights, he expressed much concern about this product, and I boiled it down to a few key areas:1. Plastic boxes. With these being plastic, and not metal, there is no way that these boxes themselves can be grounded. Therefore, if there is any wiring issue inside these boxes, then the circuit won’t ground out and trip, causing a fire hazard. Not to mention that these simply feel like cheap plastic.2. Small boxes. This is more of a hassle for the installer, but these boxes simply cannot easily contain a cable coming in, and a cable coming out. Leaves more room for error, and something going wrong.3. Lack of ground. This was a big one for me. There is no ground wire in the box, and since it’s plastic, the ground wire in a standard Romex cable is basically useless. If something goes wrong, the wires will simply keep heating the plastic box.4. Heat of the box itself. This is something I discovered after a few minutes of use. I was able to evaluate the boxes from above in the attic, and I found that after only a few minutes of the lights being on, these black boxes got hot. Not untouchably hot, but hot enough that burying these in insulation in an attic felt like a fire hazard. Given that these lights are rated for insulation contact, this was surprising.5. Improperly sized wire nuts, lack of push in cable connector. These are smaller issues, but the wire nuts weren’t the correct size for combining three wires, and the lights did not come with any sort of cable connector to secure the wire to the box — another hazard. All of these items combined, at least to me, come across as a product that is unsafe and should not be installed in homes. I’m not an electrical expert, but based on what my electrician said and my evaluation of the product, this is my experience. The lights themselves seem to be fine quality, but the electrical box is certainly the weak point.I ended up installing a set of lights from a hardware store that have a larger, metal box, with a ground, pre-installed Waco style connectors, and don’t heat up nearly as much. Yes, they are twice the price, but I feel much better about installing them on my home.
