American Oak Chips 4 oz.

I got an oak barrel for aging whisky and loved the flavor. The downside is it does require some know-how/ effort to get the barrel conditioned and stop leaks, etc. While I was working on that, I thought I'd also try aging things in a mason jar with wood chips to see what they could do. I bought these chips, added some Gin with this chips and after a couple of weeks it had a really nice oaky flavor (sounds weird but it was good!) and smoothed out the alcohol taste.Some had said that there were issues with splinters but I didn't have that problem. The chips came in a white package (not just a clear plastic bag) and while there were larger splinters, those could easily be filtered out. After I aged my Gin, I ran it through a fine mesh strainer and there were no splinters or any other odd particulates. I plan aging some cocktails with these and see where it takes me.

I put these in my water pitcher (in the bottom reservoir) to flavor my water. I was looking for an easy way to get a little gallic acid (it's an antioxidant) in my diet without drinking beer or wine, and this seems to do the trick.

I'm still wondering whether this was a superfluous product. I suppose I could go out in the hills with a hatchet and "find" me some oak chips and "toast" them, but getting them delivered in a plastic bag and dropping them into some grape wine to improve the flavor was a lot simpler process. So far, the wine smells better and I'll know whether I love this product or not when its bottling time and I'll have the chance to taste my "oaked" wine.

Short amount of chips made my beverage whisky. What else?
