Baby loves it!
My daughter got this book as a gift from our registry. She loved it. Wanted to read it every day. Multiple times per day. Eventually she destroyed it. Pulled out every tab and peeled apart pages even after we taped them up.The book is repetitive. I used to hide it, but baby always wanted it back. So, I did what moms do, and I bought her a new copy. We keep this one out of her reach while letting her play with the other one. We’ve seen other versions of this book, and the pull tab one is by far the best.Get a copy, or two! For your child if they like cats. Their glee is worth it.

Love this story- but perhaps not the setup of this version
I got this because my current version had been pretty banged up by some other kids and my son and I are a bit of a perfectionist with our books (or maybe I am and have successfully passed the ideal down to him even though he's only 3). Our previous book was only a flip book and this one has slide out tabs. I have a love/hate relationship with these tabs. In a way, it's more fun for him because he gets to do more while reading with me than flipping the pages, but when we lay in bed to read they are placed right where my hands hold the books and they apply to both sides - and with so few words I feel like we are just rushing from one tab to pull out to another. I still love this book, and my son (3 yr old) took about three read through a before he was able to identify each animal to me and start quoting the story. It's nice. But I think I would have preferred to just flip the pages.

Surprising favorite
This book is one of my 18 month old daughters favorite. At first when I got this book as a gift I didn't think much of it, but once my daughter was around 10/11months she loved hearing and being surprised by the peek a boo pages. She points to all the hidden "imposter" cats and gets so excited and claps when the cat is finally found.. We have now gone through 3 of these books because she likes to "explore" the book on her own. She has taken apart all the double pages 'looking for the cat".. My only suggestion is maybe keep it out of reach as an only read together book, or keep multiple copies if you have a tactile child like we do. ( I just keep buying multiple used copies because I know how important it is for her to explore and manipulate the books on her own)

Perfect for a toddler.
My newly 2 year old daughter is obsessed w this book. Sometimes I hide it because mama gets tired of it ha! She likes pulling out the cats and pushing them back in. Plus it teaches them basic simple language that’s why it’s perfect for toddlers learning to talk & build their vocabulary. It’s repetitive which is key in learning at this age.She used the book so much eventually the pullouts were damaged therefore against my better judgment (joke) I’m ordering her a replacement tonight. It’s extremely inexpensive for a board book so I don’t mind. We certainly got our money’s worth w the first book.

Cute book, looks used though
My daughter loves the slide books we were excited for this one. There’s is some damage to the corners of the book and some pages were stuck together. Still does the job, just not sure of the “new” quality of it.

Most negative reviews on this book are adults claiming the book is boring..
Eric Carle is a classic for a reason. He has knowledge about child development and early literacy. Most negative reviews on this book are adults claiming the book is boring....of course it is! This is actually a great book for young children's reading development. This may just be the first book your child will successfully read on their own. With short and repetative text that can be memorized, it can help teach early concepts about print. And what kids don't love a slide out book? I have ordered 3 copies of this book and plan to give them as gifts.

My 17-month son has loved this book since he was 2 months old
My 17-month son has loved this book since he was 2 months old. We're on our third iteration of it as he is now strong enough to pull the pull-out panels all the way out, ripping the cardboard, but it is worth it.I would guess this book is good for a range of ages...tiny babies like the surprise of the panels pulling out, toddlers can get into the story with the repetitiveness (my son says "no, no, no!" when we pull out a panel and it's not the right cat), and slightly older kids will be able to identify the types of cats around the world.
