Great book on the pioneers of Tiki
I felt a bit like I'd jumped into the middle of something w/o much background info--my fault, not the book's. I feel like I should have read something specifically about Don the Beachcomber first, then all his friends, associates and employees covered in this book.It is mostly non-fiction/biography. Though there are plenty of drink recipes and other media inside. If you are curious about the price, with all the full color photos etc on nearly every page I'm sure this wasn't cheap to print. It also does include a useful glossary of ingredients and a drink recipe index which are very useful if you are interested in making Tiki drinks yourself. The glossary of ingredients is especially useful as if you want to be as accurate as possible a lot of modern, commercial ingredients aren't going to cut it (according to the book).

Yo Ho Ho And A Bottle Of...
Exhaustively researched but far from exhausting to read, Sippin' Safari is simply pure pleasure from cover to cover!Written by the world's foremost expert on exotic mixology and its extremely colorful history, it's just that history which Jeff "Beachbum" Berry so enjoyably chronicles in this small but gorgeously produced volume. Most chapters concentrate on the vivid personal history of someone who had a vital role in the Polynesian Pop restaurant and exotic "tropical" cocktail craze of the late 40's through early 70's (and its current resurgence of popularity). And, as a result, this book is an addictive series of rollicking incredible-but-true adventures punctuated by remarkable drink recipes resurrected from the alcoholic ether by Berry, thanks to his own diligent detective work and the generosity of some of those characters whose lives he covers in such colorful detail. And his chapter of the history of the Zombie is a classic in itself!Reading this tome for the fourth time now, I find that I keep coming back to it the way one keeps returning to a favorite restaurant or watering hole -- once is simply not enough! The only real problem with Jeff's book is that between his mouth-watering descriptions of the full-rainbow-spectrum of delightful drinks on display and the almost pornographically alluring photos of those drinks by the talented Jonpaul Balak, I find myself DYING to sample every luscious libation I encounter! And it drives me NUTS! (But in a GOOD way!)Cheers & Bottoms Up!

Get the History Behind the Recipes
This 10th Anniversary Edition is a Jeff Berry book done right. Finally. I say that because the earlier, spiral-bound books are full of typos and clip art that make them look like they were put together in a couple days, whereas this book is beautiful throughout. There aren’t as many recipes as you’ll find in other books, but these are the ORIGINAL versions created back in the day, before they were altered or cheapened by others. Even better, it’s also the interesting origin stories behind those drinks and they’re accompanied by related memorabilia and vintage photos. I have just about all the tiki drink recipe books and this is one my favorites (along with Cocktail Codex, Potions of the Caribbean, Trader Vic’s Bartender’s Guide, and Smuggler’s Cove). It’s pricey but worth it.

Great Book! Too bad AMAZON can’t ship books properly.
Fabulous book with great photos, lore and recipes! Boo on Amazon for poor packaging choices. A third of the book is damaged and looks dog-eared because they chose to ship in a too-large box without adequate packaging. This happens way too often. Will be sending back and requesting replacement. Will use Total Tiki app for recipes in the meantime. Do better Amazon!

Fantastic read and a must-have for tiki-philes
I have read California Tiki. I've read Smuggler's Cove. I've read Trader Vic's library. And this book ranks up there as probably the definitive tome on the history of the tiki cocktail, in my humble opinion. This is a quick read. Every page is enjoyable. And now I'm working my way through the cocktails. It's a book with benefits!Highly recommended.

A must own
The recipe for the original 1934 Don the Beachcomber Zombie (the man and the drink that pretty much started it all) is worth the price of the book alone. Simply the BEST tiki drink I have ever had.The recipes in all Beachbum Berry's books took a lot of time to procure, and they are (mostly) all worth it. I think it was only the "Dr. Funk" I thought was "OK" the other 20+ drinks I've made so far have been outstanding! What makes sippin safari great, aside from the new drinks and the mind blowing Zombie is the entertaining history of the drinks and bars, as well as the great photos of interiors, exteriors, menus, etc...that aren't present in his other books. this is a book you could buy for someone who doesn't even drink. Although drinking certainly helps! This book is so thorough, I don't know what else Beachbum could do for a follow up!Cheers!
