10 amps is a very weak vacuum, likely a 1.3-1.8hp motor. No other vacuum advertises amperage as a sales tactic, but since you see 10 amps you are made to assume it’s powerful, but in truth, it’s very weak.

The I.D. of this hose being 1.5" seems to me to be rather small for cleaning out ash and coals from a fire pit. Has anyone had this problem?

You are right. Coals clog up the hose. This hose is only good for ash.
