How secure are the watches when in place? And can they touch each other. I am concerned about my watches rubbing against each when spinning.

Watches are secured with adjustable storage pads. I have both bracelets and banded watches, none of them hit or rub against the other while the winder is spinning. The unit works better plugged in than on battery power. So far I like the unit.

What setting should I use for the maximum number of rotations for a 24 hour period?

Setting 4 is best for me. I like CW and CCW rotation. 4 mins on 26 min off.

If the power goes of will the battery be a backup?

It does not work on batteries. You plug the machine in to an outlet. Once you select the setting, it automatically turns itself on and off.
