Is this cable suitable and strong enough to secure a bike itself?

It works very well with bicycles. Make sure you get a good strong lock to go with it. My husband and I have 2 of these. We park our bikes facing opposite directions right next to each other and feed one cable each through the frame and both tires front and back and to a stationary object like a pole or tree or bike stand. We’ve never had anything stolen. We also run the straps of our helmets through the cable. I understand that someone could simply disassemble the straps or cut them, but this has never happened as I’m sure it would bring too much attention to them.

No. The loops are not adjustable. I sometimes put one loop through the other around the down tube and lock it to something else, but that's not really what you asked.

It’s pretty heavy duty, I’d say it’s close to 1/16” thick , hope that helps
