Dear Paulina,Yes, the lens will work fully with the D5000. The lens is suitable for all Nikon cameras, both FX and DX types. As the D5000 camera is a DX type, the focal length of 80mm will in effect be increased to 120mm and the 400mm will be increased to 600mm. Hope this answers your query.
