Easy to read

Great book. Very clear and concise introduction to linguistics

The book is good except that it was unprotected from minor damages. Next time, put it also in a box.

初版がでたのが1985年で、改訂版が出るたびに買い足していたら、ついに8冊目になった。この第8版はやや大判になり第7版より約40ページ増えて390ページなった。全体の構造は、7版と同じで次のようである。「言語の起源」「動物と人間の言語」「言語の音声」「言語の音声パタン」「語形成」「形態論」「文法」「統語論」「意味論」「語用論」「談話分析」「言語と脳」「第1言語習得」「第2言語習得・学習」「ジェスチュアと手話」「書き言葉」「言語の歴史と変化」「言語の地域的差異「言語の社会的差異」「言語と文化」。多くの章でかなりの改訂増補が行われている。また全体的にstudy questions, tasks, discussion topics /projectsなど練習問題、課題が増え、印刷がよりカラフルになった。易しい英語で書かれているのでとっつきやすいし、版を重ねている書だけあって安心して読める内容である。大学や大学院で使う英語学[言語学]関係のテキストとして最適であるが、独学用の英語学[言語学]入門書としてもお薦めできる。

I bought this book in order to see if it would be adequate for an undergraduate linguistics course that I teach, but this textbook is far too basic for use in a linguistics course. While well written, it is severely lacking in terms of contents. There are better books out there.
