Because it blocks the sun and keeps it off of your head.

I can't answer that question. All I've been aware of is fellow ballplayers. It holds my hat on.

can you use this inside a swim cap?

Don't know why you would, but anything is possible. The issue may be that it allows the swim cap to slip/slide off the head.
