Perfectly balanced unit that does the work for you. do not press down!
WOW I never thought that sanding would be EASY and FUN. This unit is EASY to use! The weight is perfectly balanced and wants to be flat and parallel to the ground. The handle is very comfortable and there are lots of grip areas that allows for multiple grip positions. Minimal vibration to the operator, although my hands were getting slightly tingly after sanding for an hour straight.VERY quiet motor, and very quiet operation. It is the quietest power tool I own, among all of my Bosch/Dewalt/Roybi/PorterCable tools. I had previously used my friend's dewalt finish sander DEWALT D26441K 2.4-AMP Orbital 1/4-Sheet Sander with Cloth Dust Bag and that thing was just so loud! Plus the vibration was just too my for my hands and operator fatigue was too much. I could only sand 10 minutes at a time with that Dewalt finish sander. I think I can go all day long with this Bosch ROS.The soft-start feature works great, although there is still some risk of swirl marks if you don't have firm control (laterally) as you start the unit. Sometimes I let the unit spin up before putting it to the work surface (I know the manual says not to) and I think it makes start-up easier. The rubberized grip doesn't make all that much sense because it gets covered in fine sawdust within the first use, but hey why not. The canister takes a while to fill up, but the filter gets covered in minutes. I guess that means the filter is doing its job, but now I see why the canister is so small. You'd never fill that up before clogging the filter first. For all you naysayers out there, LET THE TOOL DO THE WORK. I applied zero downward pressure and it worked beautifully.I cannot stress this enough. --> *****As long as you DO NOT PRESS DOWN the tool will do the work for you and make you happy.***** If you like brute force and tiring yourself out, get some sand paper and do it by hand. If you like to work easily and efficiently without breaking a sweat, just let the machine do the work for you.The specs say "Durable and compact twist-off dust canister shows dust level and easily detaches" but honestly, you CANNOT see the dust level. The entire unit will get covered in dust and there's no way you can see through that thing easily. The included storage box is nice, and it has compartments for storing extras like one extra pad (should you buy one).BY the way, if you need to remove lots of material a ROS sander is not for you. Save yourself time, money and agony and get this planer PORTER-CABLE PC60THPK 6.0-Amp Hand Planer. Or even a belt sander, depending on your application. The planer will be quicker and cheaper than buying boxes of 80 grit paper, and a planer can leave a finish better than 80 grit anyway.

Best sander EVER
I purchased this sander partway through an extensive garage renovation. With built-in wood cabinetry that had been neglected for years, I began sanding the frames and doors using a traditional orbital sander combined with a sheet sander I had previously purchased. After some challenges and additional research, I decided to purchase the Bosch RANDOM ORBITAL sander. I quickly realized I had been missing out and should have started the project with this tool. The results are far superior to the other two sanders, and it is much easier to use, with superior results. In addition, the dust collection on this tool is superior. While the dust bin isn't necessarily easy to empty (I use a vacuum while opening), that challenge doesn't take away from the superior qualities of this sander. When combined with the "Rockler - Dust Right FlexiPort Power Tool Hose Kit with Click-Connect, 3' to 12' Expandable Hose", also sold on Amazon, you can tackle large projects while connecting the sander to your shop vac using the included connector. Best sander EVER!

Excellent at capturing dust….
I recently had the misfortune of having many of my tools stolen. One of my more recent purchases was a 5 in random orbit sander from a leading black and yellow brand. I found that to be an excellent and very effective sander. I chose to replace it with this Bosch sander because I have been very impressed with the quality of their tools and was curious how they would compare. This Bosch sander wasa bit of a let down when it comes to controllability, ergonomics, and effectiveness of the sanding. While still an excellent sander, I feel like my old one was a better tool. The only area I would say the Bosch is better in, isDust Collection. This sander makes very little mess, it collects its dust very well, with or without being attached to a vacuum. I would say that overall, I am happy with the Bosch, the quality seems to be excellent, and it does the job, just not as well as my last sander, but it does create far less of a mess, and that might be a big selling point for some buyers.

Dust canister stays on!!
I got tired of the dust canister popping off my yellow orbital sander. After reading reviews I chose this one, as I’ve had great success with other Makita tools. The canister stays in this sander, there’s less vibration, and y try o me it was well worth the cost.

I should have written a review *long* ago...
I bought my sander in 2016 and have used it *a ton* on wood working and metal working projects. This spring I even used it to sand the hull of my fiberglass sailboat. It simply is one of the best thought-out power tools in my arsenal. It collects dust *very* well with its included exhaust filter. In eight years I've never had to replace the filter, I just use my shop vac to suck out all the dust and debris from the filter, and away we go! That said, it also works well in collecting dust when joined with a shop vac; several days of continuous use on the sailboat proved that. What tipped me over to finally write a review is that the pad finally wore out. After eight years the sander wouldn't hold onto sanding pads any longer. But... replacement pads are available! Cheap! On Amazon! My recommendation; buy two replacement pads. Who knows if they'll still be available in 2032?While I'm at it I think that I'll search for a replacement filter, just in case...
