The lights don't come on for me. If I cover with my hand they come on, but at night, they don't come on automatically. Any suggestions?

Hi, if you cover the solar panel and the light come on, it means that the light sensor are good to work. Please make sure the solar panel is away from other light source at night. Also, for the first time use, plese let them charge fully by direct sunlight during daytime.

What is the best height for this solar up and down lights?

In generally, we would advise fitting solar wall lights outdoor between 1-2 meters /about 3-7 feet from floor level, which means they are about eye level or slightly above for most people. Since the wall lights have led reflector lens, the lighting is brighter and more focused with a long-range of up to 20 feet. It is ideals for outdoor walls for house, steps, outside aisles, or backyard tall fence, etc.

Why batteries though? Aren't these solar?

Not for sure but all our solar lighting we purchased have batteries. Rechargeable batteries, which hold the power so lights can go on.
