As with any hydrocarbon it will burn, an old name for this is wood alcohol. As with any lamp, the answer would depend if the lamp was designed for the fuel. In the past it was possible to buy lamp oil which is a more refined paraffin. You can use paraffin in lieu of lamp oil but it will smoke a little more but by keeping the wick trimmed it can be kept to a minimum. So short answer NO use paraffin.

Q: Would this get fence paint off of uPVC?

As most fence paints these days are not up to the standards of genuine creosote I would use water first. For really stubborn paint marks try callous paint thinners. After that experiment with the above.

The Internet tells me: "Denatured alcohol and isopropyl alcohol have similar uses, but they differ chemically. Denatured alcohol is ethyl alcohol with toxic or bad tasting additives that make it unsuitable for consumption. The chemical formula of ethyl is C2H6O and the formula for isopropyl alcohol is C3H8O."
